Milling with a robot: autonox debuts new solution with Siemens

autonox has demonstrated that a 6-axis robot can deliver impressive performance even when milling steel. In cooperation with Siemens and the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (IFAM), the company unveiled its innovative robotic milling solution for the first time at Automatica. The system combines highly rigid robot mechanics, precise motion control, and Siemens' Sinumerik CNC controller.

Initial tests of the new robotic milling system have been highly successful. The solution enables users to machine very large and long components made from exceptionally hard materials with high precision, even for demanding industries such as aerospace. This performance is made possible by autonox’s latest robot mechanics. Working closely with Siemens and Fraunhofer IFAM, Autonox developed a highly rigid robotic structure with outstanding motion accuracy.

The compact mechanical design features an exceptionally rigid construction, based on dual-bearing support for axes 2, 3, and 5, as well as oversized precision gearboxes. This ensures consistent machining performance regardless of tool position. As a result, even large and lengthy workpieces made from hard materials, such as those used in aerospace applications, can be machined with exceptional precision. Combined with a linear axis, machining lengths of ten meters or more are possible.

Paired with the Siemens Sinumerik controller, the robot can be programmed via G-code, just like a conventional CNC milling machine. Compared with traditional machine tools, the robotic solution offers greater flexibility. It requires less floor space, is less location-dependent, and provides a more cost-effective alternative, particularly for large-format components or confined production environments. Initial tests involving hardened and tempered steel were completed successfully.

More than 340 robot kinematics

This collaboration with Siemens and Fraunhofer IFAM is an excellent example of how autonox leverages its controller-independent robot mechanics to create customized, application-oriented robotic solutions together with its partners. The company's portfolio now comprises more than 340 different mechanical variants.

Through its LINKED Robotics partner program, autonox aims to further strengthen collaboration with system partners to develop tailored automation solutions. The objective is to optimally coordinate mechanics, drives, control technology, software, simulation, and peripherals according to the specific application requirements.

The enhanced autonox Finder online catalog supports customers, including machine builders, in selecting the right robot kinematics. It provides compatibility information for various control platforms, technical documentation, and a database of compatible components.

Database of compatible components

Under the LINKED Robotics initiative, autonox Finder integrates a comprehensive database of compatible components from various manufacturers. This includes motor recommendations for all parallel kinematics as well as motor specifications from leading control system partners. The offering is complemented by extensive technical documentation that significantly simplifies commissioning, service, and maintenance.

New tools for Simulation and Digital Planning

autonox is further expanding its digital portfolio with the introduction of autonox Simulator, a new simulation tool. The software enables users to analyze the motion behavior of a robot kinematic system at an early stage, for example in pick-and-place applications, even without detailed motor data. Motion paths generated by control systems from LINKED Control partners can be imported directly into the simulator.
